Otoplasty: This is the medical term for the operation, which corrects prominent ears

Otoplasty is quite a commonly performed procedure. The problem is caused by a failure during the baby's development to complete the folding process in the cartilage of the newly formed ear. Because of this incomplete folding the ears stand away from the side of the head.

The operation involves correcting the shape of the ear cartilage. The work is done from the back of the ear so that no scars can be seen from the front. The procedure takes about one hour to complete and the patient goes home the same day. It is necessary to wear a full head bandage for one week in order to protect the ears. The sutures are removed after twelve to fourteen days.
